The eighth-seeded Boston Breach upset the top-seeded Los Angeles Thieves 3-2 on Thursday as the Call of Duty League Championship got underway in Kitchener, Ontario.

In other opening-round results, OpTic Texas routed the Atlanta FaZe 3-0, the Miami Heretics downed the Vancouver Surge 3-1, and the Toronto Ultra defeated the Carolina Royal Ravens 3-1.

The top eight teams from the Call of Duty League’s regular season qualified for the double-elimination event that caps the season’s Black Ops 6 competition.

All matches are best-of-five until the best-of-nine grand final on Sunday. The championship team will earn $800,000.

On Thursday, the Thieves opened with a 250-199 win on Vault Hardpoint before the Breach captured Hacienda Search and Destroy 6-2 and Vault Control 3-2. Los Angeles extended the series by taking Rewind Hardpoint 250-132, but Boston wrapped up the victory by prevailing 6-3 on Red Card Search and Destroy.

The United States’ Cuyler “Huke” Garland registered 60 kills and a plus-13 K-D differential for OpTic. Tyler “aBeZy” Pharris of the United States had 53 kills and an even K-D differential for the FaZe.

After Vancouver took Vault Hardpoint 250-105, Miami won the next three maps: 6-4 on Dealership Search and Destroy, 3-1 on Vault Control and 250-156 on Hacienda Hardpoint.

Spain’s David “RenKoR” Isern powered the Heretics with 89 kills and a plus-13 K-D differential. The United States’ Jovan “04” Rodriguez amassed 84 kills and a plus-5 K-D differential for the Surge.

Toronto claimed Vault Hardpoint 250-117 ahead of Carolina’s 6-4 win on Dealership Search and Destroy. The Ultra then prevailed 3-2 on Protocol Control and 250-230 on Rewind Hardpoint.
