Most of us have heard of take your child to work in pre-pandemic times but it’s doubtful if anyone has heard of take a bear to your campaign. In these almost post pandemic times, thanks to the successful vaccine drive by the governor, one recall candidate decided that he needed to shift attention from the recovery of the state to him with the help of an unusual campaign. California’s gubernatorial recall candidate John Cox took along a 1,000-pound bear as a part of his campaign.
He took Tag the bear along with him to Sacramento and raised the ire of animal activists and more. However, when he repeated the act at San Diego on Tuesday, he may have to face more than the wrath of those who consider his publicly gimmick to be a type of animal cruelty and abuse. He may have violated a city code related to unusual animals and could face a misdemeanor charge.
San Diego TV stations – NBC San Diego and ABC-10 confirm that he is under investigation. The San Diego Humane Society’s law enforcement division is looking into Cox and his campaign. The city code states that no person shall offer for sale, give away, bring into, or maintain within an area coming within the jurisdiction of this ordinance any lion, tiger, bear, monkey, wolf, cougar, ocelot, wildcat, or skunk.
Cox’s campaign issued a statement to both the TV stations which stated that that every care was to ensure Tag’s comfort and safety with the approval of several government agencies. It also said that California needed beastly changes and that may ruffle some feathers of left-wing activists. When asked which government agencies had given approval, there was no response from the campaign team.
Cox is using the bear to gain attention and rebrand his campaign. After initial struggles, he rebranded himself as “Beast John Cox.” In March, he received six votes, for a sixth-place finish in a straw poll that was conducted among recall organizers.
Many people asked Cox about the bear, several times, when he campaigned at Shelter Island. After initial prevarication, he finally admitted that it was an attempt to gain attention. The bear has been brought up in captivity and has been used for private shows.
California’s governor Gary Newsom and John Cox have faced each other before in 2018 and Newsom won by almost three million votes. Newsom has called the recall vote a waste of both time and money as the gubernatorial elections will be held anyway, in the Golden State, months later in 2022.
