In a landmark case that marks a significant moment in California’s legal history, Vicente David Romero has been sentenced in the state’s first fentanyl-related murder case. The conviction and sentencing of Romero are symbolic of the growing crisis surrounding fentanyl and its deadly consequences. Romero testified that he gave King a fentanyl-laced pill known as “blue or M30” with knowledge, and the prosecution called ten witnesses and played bodycam evidence to support their claims.
On August 31, a jury found 34-year-old Vicente David Romero guilty of second-degree murder in connection with the 2020 death of 26-year-old Kelsey King.
Vicente David Romero, 34, of Temecula, was sentenced this past Friday to 15 years to life in prison. Romero acknowledged five more crimes, each of which carries a maximum term of six years and eight months in jail, in addition to the conviction for second-degree murder. Prosecutors said Romero told detectives, King’s death “is on me because I gave her the pills.”
In trial proceedings, King’s father made a statement to the defendant. “How do I tell her children that ‘your mother is dead because of a worthless piece of “blank” wanted to have sex with her and slipped her poison that killed her within three minutes.”
Judge Timothy Freer handed down Romero’s sentence Friday and sounded a warning.
“It should be known far and wide, that the district attorney, that’s Mr. Hestrin, and his deputy, Mr. Pfohl, who prosecuted this case, along with the sheriff’s office, that’s Chad Bianco, and the deputies who testified, they will aggressively investigate and prosecute individuals for furnishing fentanyl causing death. That should be abundantly clear. They will seek murder charges in this case. They will obtain convictions,” Freer said.
