California governor Gavin Newsom blasted Texas Governor Greg Abbott after the recent mass shooting in Allen, Texas. He shared a post on a popular social media condemning Republicans for standing idly while armed gunmen opened fire in Texas. The comments were posted after a mass shooting took place at an outlet mall, located in Allen, Texas.
Gavin Newsom questioned, “This is freedom? To be shot in a mall? Shot at school? Shot at the movies?”

He added that the nation had changed its focus and that the “right to kill” was more in focus than the “right to live.”
After the shooting, Texas Governor Greg Abbott described the mass killing as “an unspeakable tragedy.” He said that the state’s law enforcement and investigative resources were supporting local officials.
Abbott had also said that that people had wanted a quick solution, but the long-term solution was “to address the mental health issue.”
He also said that both red and blue states faced gun violence and that California had the greatest number of victims due to gun violence.
On Sunday, Governor Newsom shared Governor Abbott’s clip and his rebuttal. He said Governor Abbott had conveniently left out “the fact that Texas’ gun death rate is 73% higher than CA’s” and more.
He also said Abbott had cut over $200 million in mental health funding in Texas. The cut was reportedly made in part due to staffing armed soldiers at the Texas-Mexico border by the Abbott administration.
Texas Tribune reported that the Lone Star State ranked 51 among states and Washington DC for per capita spending on mental health. It also said that community groups which treat children for mental illnesses think that they are not a priority for government funding.
Governor Newsom has called out Governor Abbott in the past as well for issues ranging from abortion rights to plans of phasing out gasoline-powered vehicles in California.
