Kenneth Chesebro, a pro Trump attorney and Sidney Powell, who is a former attorney of Donald Trump, have pleaded guilty in the Georgia election case where former president Donald Trump and his co-defendants are facing charges for violating the anti-racketeering law in Georgia. On Thursday morning, Sidney Powell pleaded guilty to six misdemeanors and had agreed to testify against co-defendants in future. On Friday, Kenneth Chesebro pleaded guilty to one felony charge and will co-operate with the prosecutors.
Kenneth Chesebro pleaded guilty to the charge of conspiracy to commit filing false documents. He had originally faced seven felony charges, and six charges were dropped as part of the deal. Prosecutors in Fulton County asked for a sentence of 5 years of probation and a fine of $5,000 in restitution. Judge Scott McAffee imposed this sentence at the hearing on Friday. Chesebro will also testify in court proceedings in future. He will also write an apology letter to the citizens of Georgia.
Six years of probation, a fine of $6000, and $2,700 as restitution to the state and a written apology letter to the state and residents of Georgia are part of the deal that the ex-Trump attorney Sidney Powell struck with the authorities. Sidney Powell also recorded a statement for the prosecution and will cooperate with them. She will testify truthfully against the co-defendants who plead not guilty, in future trials. She will also hand over documents relevant to the case to the district attorney’s office.
In September, Scott Hall entered a guilty plea to five misdemeanors. The 59-year-old Georgia bail bondsman was also facing charges similar to those of Sidney Powell including trying to overturn the election by breaching voting equipment in Georgia.
Although she was not directly involved when the data breach took place at the election’s office in Coffee County, Sidney Powell was one of the lawyers who were responsible for hiring the SullivanStriker, the consultancy that helped the breaching voting equipment.
Georgia’s Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger replaced the voting machines in Coffee County. He said that Georgia law had been violated by “the unauthorized access to the equipment.”
Kenneth Chesebro pleaded guilty on Friday morning, after jury selection began. Dallas-based lawyer Powell entered the guilty plea, one day before the case against her came to trial.
Sidney Powell had championed baseless conspiracy theories about the 2020 elections and had also filed lawsuits to challenge the results that were in favor of Joe Biden. Sidney Powell was a key adviser to Donald Trump. She was part of his inner circle of confidants and her guilty plea could be a blow to his case while strengthening the case of the prosecutors.
After Kenneth Chesebro pleaded guilty, Fulton County District Attorney Fani T Willis’ case against the rest of the co-defendants could get stronger. However, the office has not commented on the plea deal. Trump and 15 other co-defendants have pleaded not guilty. They include Rudy Giuliani, who is facing several other cases, and John Eastman.
