Democrats and independents who lean Democratic are more likely to back President Biden for the party’s nomination in 2024, according to a new national survey.
In an NPR/PBS NewsHour/Marist survey published on Wednesday, 50% of Democrats and independents who lean Democratic said their party would have a better chance of winning the White House in 2024 if Biden were the candidate. Forty-five percent of respondents agreed that having a different nominee would help their campaign.
Since the president was trailing on that question in a similar November Marist survey, this represents a significant shift in public opinion.
On the other hand, the majority of Republicans and Republican leaning independents polled across the country believe the Republican Party will have a greater chance of retaking the White House in 2024 if they nominate someone else.
According to a press release from Marist, “this shift in opinion coincides with an increase in Biden’s approval percentage among Americans, overall, following last week’s State of the Union Address.”
