Brandon Miller: Fatal shooting of woman ‘heartbreaking’

Alabama freshman Brandon Miller, newly minted as the SEC Player of the Year, broke his silence Wednesday about the fatal shooting of a woman in Tuscaloosa, Ala., calling the incident “really heartbreaking.”

Miller was identified by a police detective as the person who delivered the gun that ex-Alabama teammate Darius Miles and another man are accused of using to allegedly gun down Jamea Jonae Harris in January.

“I never lose sight of the fact that a family has lost one of their loved ones that night,” Miller said Wednesday from Nashville, Tenn., site of the SEC tournament. “This whole situation is just really heartbreaking. Respectfully, that’s all I’m going to be able to say on that.”

Miles and another man, Michael Lynn Davis, have been charged with capital murder in the death of Harris, 23, who was fatally shot on Jan. 15 near the Alabama campus. An investigator working the case, Branden Culpepper, said two weeks ago that Miller delivered the gun allegedly used in the shooting to Miles at his request.

Davis allegedly fired the fatal shot.

Miller has not been charged in the case, and fourth-ranked Alabama (26-5) has continued to allow him to play.

The 6-foot-9 forward from Antioch, Tenn., a projected lottery pick, started all 30 regular-season games for the Crimson Tide in the regular season and averaged 19.6 points and 8.0 rebounds per game. He shot 40.4 percent from 3-point range.

The SEC tourney gets underway Wednesday. Alabama plays its first game Friday in the quarterfinals.
