A Minnesota man allegedly beat, raped, and waterboarded his girlfriend after holding her hostage in her college dorm. He reportedly exhibited such behavior for three days as he found texts on her phone, which “infuriated him.” The 20-year-old man has accepted a plea deal of a lesser charge—a second-degree criminal sexual charge. He could face a maximum prison term of seven years and six months.
On Friday, Minnesota officials reached a plea deal with Keanu Labatte. He is pleading guilty to a single amended charge. The charge is second-degree criminal sexual conduct. The 20-year-old from Granite Falls admitted to choking and sexually assaulting the woman in her dorm room in St. Catherine.
All other charges have been dismissed. He can receive a maximum sentence of seven and a half years, which prosecutors will ask for, while the defense asks for probation. The sentencing is scheduled for early November.
Keanu Labatte was arrested in September 2023 at St. Catherine’s University, an all-female school in St. Paul, Minnesota. His alleged victim escaped from the room to go to buy food on Sunday and contacted campus security, who alerted the police.
The 19-year-old pled the Fifth when police read him his Miranda rights when they went to arrest him in the dorm. A knife and a damp towel were found in the room. The police also found the mattress on the floor.
The complaint alleged that Labatte visited the campus on Thursday to meet his new girlfriend. After getting infuriated by texts he found on her phone, he took away her phone.
He reportedly strangled her, forced her to lie on a bathtub, covered her face with a washcloth, and poured water on the young woman. He also reportedly sexually assaulted her and placed the mattress on the floor for sound to be minimized and also threatened her.
Labatte’s lawyer said that his client “did not admit to the other kind of salacious details” of “waterboarding, or holding her hostage or kidnapping.”
Labatte was on probation in Yellow Medicine County for violating a harassment restraining order by the family of another victim, according to court records; local ABC affiliate KSTP reported when the alleged assault took place in St. Catherine’s, Minnesota.
