Makai Ashton-Langford scored a team-high 16 points, and Boston College turned in its best defensive effort of the season in a 63-48 victory over No. 6 Virginia on Wednesday night in Chestnut Hill, Mass.

Jaeden Zackery and DeMarr Langford Jr. each added 12 points for Boston College (14-15, 8-10 Atlantic Coast Conference), which shot 26 of 50 from the field (52 percent).

Virginia (21-5, 13-4) was within five points, 28-23, when Jayden Gardner made the first field goal of the second half, but the Cavaliers never got any closer. BC had a 38-25 lead following a Zackery layup with 14:30 to play.

It was the first time a BC team has defeated a top-10 opponent since the Eagles knocked off top-ranked Duke in 2017.

Virginia, which entered the game in first place in the ACC, shot 19 of 59 from the field, including 4 of 21 from behind the 3-point arc. It was Virginia’s lowest offensive output of the season and ended the team’s four-game winning streak.

Gardner led Virginia with 16 points. Kihei Clark and Ben Vander Plas each tossed in seven for the Cavaliers, who never found any rhythm on offense.

It was the third ranked opponent BC has beaten this season. The Eagles defeated then-No. 21 Virginia Tech 70-65 in overtime on Dec. 21, and beat Clemson 62-54 on Jan. 31, when the Tigers were ranked 20th in the country.

Virginia beat BC 76-57 on Jan. 28 in the first meeting between the teams this season.

It was a miserable first half at the offensive end of the court for Virginia, which was 8 of 29 (27.6 percent) from the field and 1 of 10 on 3-point attempts before trailing 28-21 at halftime. The Cavaliers were held to eight points in the final 12:57 of the half.

BC’s largest lead in the first half was nine points.
