Boris Johnson lied over rule-breaking, report on ‘partygate’ scandal says, UK parliament endorses report

On Monday, the House of Commons endorsed a report that said that Boris Johnson had lied over rule breaking during the pandemic, when he was the Prime Minister of the U.K. The scandal called ‘partygate’ rocked the nation, led to a diminished popularity of the former prime minister among the masses, although some of his Conservative Party members still support him. Boris Johnson resigned from parliament earlier in June, after seeing an advance copy of the report.

There was a yearlong investigation into the scandal that parties were held at 10 Downing Street when Boris Johnson was the Prime Minister of the U.K. The nation had been in lockdown. However, there were leaked photos, videos and information that parties had been held during this period.

Last week, the committee looking into this grave matter of rule-breaking at the highest level of governance had concluded that Boris Johnson had deliberately lied to colleagues. Although he knew what was happening around him, he told the House of Commons that government buildings had been following all COVID-19 protocols.

The recommendations in the report included denial of a pass that gave him automatic access to parliament and a 90-day suspension that would prevent him from attending the House of Commons. However, Johnson superceded the recommendations by resigning before the report was placed before parliament, as he had already seen an advance copy of the report.

On Monday, lawmakers at the House of Commons had a five-hour debate on the findings. Later, they voted 354 to 7 in favor of the report.

Although Boris Johnson can stand once again for a seat in the House of Commons, the findings might prove to be a future embarrassment as opponents are bound to bring it up, before an election.

The former mayor of London and Prime Minister of the U.K. has also seen a plummet in his popularity among the majority of people in the U.K. as well as many of his own party members. Boris Johnson cut a controversial figure as he led the Tories as Prime Minister from mid 2019 to September 2022. He is a diehard supporter of Brexit.

Prime Minister Rishi Sunak was not present during the debate and vote as his spokesman said that he was busy welcoming the prime minister of Sweden.

Former prime minister Boris Johnson described the committee as a “kangaroo court” and said that the report was part of a long “political assassination” against him.
