Bob Melvin set to rejoin Padres after prostate surgery

San Diego Padres manager Bob Melvin will rejoin the team and resume his duties on Friday, just nine days after undergoing prostate surgery.

Melvin will be back running the team for the start of a weekend series against the Giants in San Francisco. The Padres announced last week that his procedure found no cancer.

Before the surgery, Melvin had targeted missing just the Padres’ series in Atlanta and Philadelphia, and he accomplished that goal. During his absence, San Diego took two of three against the Braves and then two of three against the Phillies, capped by a 2-0 win in Philadelphia on Thursday.

Melvin also missed time before the operation due to his condition. His fill-in, bench coach Ryan Christenson, recorded a 6-3 mark as interim manager.

Melvin, 60, is in his first season as the Padres’ manager after an 11-year run in charge of the Oakland A’s. He previously managed the Seattle Mariners (2003-04) and the Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-09).

In 19 years as a major league skipper, he owns a 1,370-1,286 regular-season record (.516) and a 10-17 mark in the playoffs.
