Blue Origin, the aerospace company founded by Jeff Bezos, achieved a significant milestone with the successful launch of its New Glenn mega-rocket on its first attempt. Named after John Glenn, the astronaut who made the first American orbital flight in 1962, the 322-foot rocket lifted off at 2:03 a.m. ET following minor delays, including one caused by an unexpected boat in the launch zone.

Within 15 minutes of liftoff, New Glenn passed the Kármán line and achieved orbit, hitting the primary objective of its maiden voyage. The second stage of the rocket, NG-1, completed two successful burns and reached its intended orbit, marking a significant achievement for Blue Origin’s mission.

Despite the success in reaching orbit, the company’s reusable first-stage booster failed to land on its designated pad, “Jacklyn,” in the Atlantic Ocean. Blue Origin’s CEO, Dave Limp, acknowledged the challenge of landing the booster on the first attempt but expressed pride in the successful orbit achievement.

Limp stated, “We’ll learn a lot from today and aim for a better outcome in our next launch this spring.” The launch marks an essential step in Blue Origin’s development of its reusable space vehicle, which is being tested to deliver satellites into orbit.

Blue Origin has secured satellite launch contracts with major companies like Amazon (AMZN) and AST SpaceMobile and has ambitious plans, including launching Orbital Reef, a proposed space station. The successful test flight of New Glenn represents a significant step forward in Blue Origin’s quest to advance commercial space exploration.

“We’re focused on ramping our launch cadence and manufacturing rates,” said Jarett Jones, Blue Origin executive overseeing the New Glenn project, highlighting the company’s growth and future ambitions in the space industry.
