Marvel Studios’ Black Panther: Wakanda Forever had a dominating debut and earned $180 million over the weekend. Its global launch has collected $330 million. It has broken all November openings in North America from 2018, when Lionsgate’s The Hunger Games: Catching Fire earned $158 million, in 2013. The success is sweet, yet sad as Black Panther, Chadwick Boseman, the soul of the 2018 Black Panther succumbed to cancer in 2020, at the age of 43 years.
After the untimely death of Chadwick Boseman in 2020, Ryan Coogler, who is both the director and a co-writer of the franchise, rewrote the script of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever in honor of the celebrity actor. The refashioned script showed art imitating real life.
The story of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever details how the kingdom of Wakanda deals with the demise of King T’Challa. The reel life imitating real life finds resonance with both the audience and film critics who have praised the deft handling of the sequel.
The Disney movie Black Panther: Wakanda Forever missed star Chadwick Boseman who had pulled in the 25+ male crowd at 31 percent in Part 1. However, Part 2 has pulled in women over 25 at 32 percent. The poignant story without King T’Challa has done well as the franchise remains popular with the audience.
The other movies in the top five this week include the following:
Warner Bros. and DC take the second position with Black Adam. The movie grossed $8.6 million making its domestic earnings $151.1 million.
At third place, Universal’s rom-com “Ticket to Paradise starring Julia Roberts and George Clooney hauled in $6.1 million with its domestic total at $56.5 million.
Sony’s “Lyle, Lyle Crocodile netted $3.2 million with a domestic haul of $40.8 million since its October opening and is at the fourth spot.
The fifth spot belongs to Smile, a low-budget horror movie from Paramount with a collection of $2.3 million. Although it cost only $17 million to make, it has already raked in $102.8 million in the domestic market.
