President Joe Biden addressed the nation on March 1. In his “State of the Union” address he also had Vice President Kamala Harris and Speaker Nancy Pelosi behind him, showing that the nation is finally taking more steps towards equality and inclusiveness. The president addressed several issues that are confronting both the nation and abroad.
President Biden struck a positive note in his speech despite the regret that his and his administration’s comprehensive Build Back Better has not be passed by Congress. He delivered an hour long speech mask less, which shows that the government and the nation is coming back to normalcy.
Although he began his speech by saying that Russia and specifically its president President would “pay a price,” he later shifted to a domestic agenda, some of which drew a standing ovation from Republicans as well. He adopted a centrist approach in his vision for the nation.
Some of the highlights of his State of Union address are the following:
Biden spoken of funding the police, keeping schools open and support for Ukraine. These issues drew bipartisan support.
He asked for increased spending on child care which received silence from the Republicans.
Biden criticized the tax cut that was made by former President Trump and as expected this got no support from the Republicans. He tried to renew efforts for Build Back Better parts of which were pushed back not only by the Republicans but also by two Democrats Senators Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema. He wanted bipartisan support for elder care and more.
Biden called for support for climate change initiatives as well drug price controls questioning Congress by asking what all of them were waiting for.
The President also spoke of the opioid crisis, additional help for the mentally ill and initiatives to end cancer for which he asked Congress to come together to defeat these pressing challenges. He also called for support for veterans, an emotional issue, as they have been protecting the nation but have sometimes not received enough protection themselves due to PTSD and more.
Biden spoke on Covid and said that although he could not promise that a new variant won’t emerge, he could promise that the Biden administration would do everything to be ready to tackle it, if it came.
President Biden also spoke very briefly on climate change, immigration, gun control and abortion rights.
