Democrats seized total control of the Virginia statehouse, defeating rising GOP star Gov. Glenn Youngkin and preventing Republicans from enacting additional limits on abortion.

In Kentucky, where Trump had won by a margin of 26 percentage points, Democratic Governor Andy Beshear was re-elected. In debates and television commercials, Beshear had attacked the abortion stances of Attorney General Daniel Cameron, his Republican opponent.

In Ohio, a state that Trump won by eight percentage points in 2020, a ballot initiative protecting abortion rights was approved. Republicans had previously attempted to stall the legislation.

After winning the special election in the state’s first congressional district, former Biden White House adviser Gabe Amo will become the first Black member of Congress from Rhode Island.

The president and his campaign staff will probably be able to take a breather after Tuesday’s win. One area in which they might try to gain some ground on Mr. Trump and the GOP is the abortion issue.

Since President Joe Biden took office, Democrats have regularly done well in non-presidential elections, as demonstrated by their performance in the midterm elections last year and the multiple special elections this year.

“Across the country tonight, democracy won and MAGA lost,” Biden wrote on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter, referencing Trump’s “Make America Great Again” slogan. “Voter’s vote. Polls don’t.”
