A National Security Council spokesman recently said that President Joe Biden felt that the nation’s relationship with Saudi Arabia could be reevaluated after working with Congress. This decision has been made after OPEC+ decided to decrease the production of oil, last week, when they announced that output would be cut by two million barrels a day. This decision was made, despite lobbying from the US administration and Biden had called the move a “disappointment .”
National Security Council coordinator for strategic communications John Kirby recently appeared on an interview on CNN’s “New Day.” When pressed by Brianna Keilar about the strong words expressed by Senate Foreign Affairs Chairman Bob Mendez on the nation’s relationship with Saudi Arabia, Kirby said that the President was “willing to work with Congress” as they thought about the “right relationship” that was needed, “going forward.”
Kirby also said that he thought that President Biden had “been very clear” that they continued “to reevaluate” and that they needed to be “willing to revisit” the relationship between Saudi Arabia and the US.
He also mentioned that the recent decision taken by the OPEC had made him willing to work with Congress as to how the relationship would proceed.
In July, President Joe Biden had visited Saudi Arabia for a conference, following which there was a small increase in the production of oil from OPEC+. However, last week’s announcement of a decrease in oil output has disappointed President Biden.
After Wednesday’s decision by OPEC +, the White House mentioned that the president would release oil from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve (SPR), when necessary. Earlier in the year, he had announced the release of barrels from the SPR, when the pump price in the nation had reached high levels.
On Tuesday, the White House said that it would go ahead with the 180 million barrels release as announced earlier. However, after the Wednesday OPEC+ announcement, the US government is considering additional release from the SPR, when necessary.
