On Thursday, President Joe Biden was interviewed by news anchor Leslie Host on NBC. He spoke on a wide range of issues including the need for Americans to leave Ukraine, mask mandates, the nomination of a new Supreme Court judge and Build Back Better. In the sit-down interview, President Biden spoke at length on these issues and we are mentioning a few salient points
On Ukraine
President Biden categorically said, “American citizens should leave now.” He said that they were dealing with one of the largest armies in the world. He emphasized that it was a very different situation (from Afghanistan) and said that “things could go crazy quickly.”
In an advisory warning from the State Department it was emphasized that the nation would not be able to “evacuate U.S. citizens in the event of military action anywhere in Ukraine.”
President Biden will be holding a virtual meeting on the tense situation between Ukraine and Russia with NATO allies and others, on Friday to discuss both “diplomacy and deterrence.”
On mask mandates
President Biden said that he would follow the “science” and the recommendations of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and “federal people.” However, he also added that there probably will be “less and less requirement to have the mask” as vaccines are being developed for children.
On the Supreme Court
Biden said that he would fulfil his campaign promise of elevating a Black woman to the Supreme Court after Justice Stephen Breyer said he will step down. He said that his pick would get some support from Republicans
On Build Back Better
Biden admitted that he was unable to advance his social safety net bill and said that he thought that he hadn’t “sold it well.” A source familiar with the matter said that it could still be possible to get Sen. Manchin on board by adding provisions for deficit reduction.
