Although Jeff Bezos founder of Amazon has stepped down from his chief executive role in the giant e-commerce company, in July 2021, he continues to lead in other ways. The Bezos Family Foundation has made the largest ever gift that the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle has ever received. The $710 million donation is one of the largest funds that has been received by a single cancer research organization.

On Wednesday, The Hutch as it is widely known as, said that the gift would be used for the following purposes in the next ten years:
Setting up 36 new research labs
Building a huge research facility
Investing in clinical trial infrastructure and
Investing in immunotherapy research.

The Bezos family’s philanthropic efforts were led by Mike and Jackie Bezos, who are the parents of Jeff Bezos. Jackie is his mother while Mike is his stepfather. The family has deep value for collaboration in research and treatment of cancer and wish to facilitate cures to cancer patients, at the earliest.

In a statement Mike Bezos said that they hoped that their investment in The Hutch would lead to “answers for the most pressing medical questions.” Bezos Sr. also hoped that their gift would inspire others to join in, at the current moment, to pursue “scientific and medical breakthroughs.”

In April, Fred Hutch had merged with Seattle Cancer Care Alliance. In September, Stuart and Mary Sloan gifted $78 million to the expanded center. The center is receiving more major gifts this year than before.

Last year, the center reported that 8 percent of its overall revenue, $86.6 million out of $984 of its overall revenue had come from philanthropic gifts.

Thomas Lynch, president and director of The Hutch said, “Research gives you hope and gives us hope that options might be different for the next patients down the road.”

President Joe Biden had asked the private sector and foundations to make donations for cancer research in the US. In February, Biden set a goal of cutting fatalities due to cancer by 50 percent in the nation, in the next 25 years.
