On Tuesday, consumer electronics retailer Best Buy (BBY) said that it had reached a three-year deal with a health care system based in North Carolina. The company that is well known for the installation of TVs and home-theater systems will now set up virtual hospital rooms with the help of Atrium Health. Best Buy’s Geek Squad will enable the health-care system to set up a hospital-at-home.

The electronic retailer’s Geek Squad will set up technology at a patient’s home that would remotely monitor vital body functions such as heart rate, blood oxygen levels and more. The squad will also train patients or others in the home on how to use the devices. Doctors and nurses will securely obtain the data from these devices using Current Health’s telemedicine hub.
In mid-February Best Buy set up virtual care systems for 10 hospitals. The program that was set up in and around Charlotte in North Carolina was the first step and the retailer hopes to have about 100 patients per day in the program. This would approximately be equal to a mid-sized hospital, without a physical structure.
Best Buy has bought three health care companies–GreatCall, Critical Signal Technologies and Current Health that will help it set up the program. These companies have technologies that connect devices, monitor devices and more. Best Buy sells devices as well.
Atrium Health started its hospital-at-home program during Covid. Now, the company believes that the program can be used by patients with other conditions including those who are recovering from a heart condition, or an infection, or a surgery.

Atrium Health has reported that its hospital-at-home program has served more than 6,300 patients. Patients can pay for the program through private insurance, as well as Medicare or Medicaid.
