Director Trevor Anderson impresses with his entertaining and remarkable first feature film, Before I Change My Mind, which presents a humorously irreverent coming-of-age story. The exploration of gender identity transitions into a more comprehensive examination of identity. Anderson does not use pronouns or labels.
When Robin arrived in a small-town middle school in 1987, the other kids immediately asked, “Are you a boy or a girl?” Robin develops a complex relationship with the school bully, Carter, and begins to make riskier decisions to be accepted.
Trevor Anderson’s first full-length film, following more than ten years of creating short films, is set in his nostalgic reflection of 1987. The film, titled Before I Change My Mind, starts with a clichéd outcast scene reminiscent of John Hughes’ style in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. The film deserves credit for this deceptive move.
