“Before” is a chilling, slow-burn psychological thriller that will appeal to fans of layered, emotionally complex narratives. Its blend of grief, guilt, and psychological tension keeps viewers on edge, building anticipation toward its dark, sinister reveal. As Eli tries to save Noah, we wonder if Eli will survive his haunted past.
“Before” is a psychological thriller that follows Eli (Ben Crystal), a child psychologist grappling with the grief of losing his wife, Lynn. Struggling to return to normalcy, Eli’s life turns dark when he meets his latest client, Noah (Jacob Jupe), a troubled foster child who seems to be connected to Eli’s past in ways that confuse and terrify him. As the story unfolds, viewers are pulled into a web of mystery, hallucinations, and buried secrets, leaving Eli questioning the boundary between reality and the supernatural.
Eli, still reeling from his wife’s death, finds solace in his work as a child psychologist. However, things change dramatically when Noah enters his life. Noah is not just another patient—he’s haunted by the same kind of visions Eli experiences, with both characters having terrifying hallucinations of people from their pasts. Noah’s persistent focus on drawing a mysterious farmhouse ties directly into Eli’s own suppressed memories, pushing Eli to confront his trauma.
As Noah spirals—getting expelled from school and struggling to fit in at his foster home—Eli becomes obsessed with the boy’s well-being. He’s convinced there’s a deeper reason they’ve crossed paths. But as their relationship intensifies, so do the dangers, with Noah accusing Eli of a mysterious wrongdoing: “You know what you did!” This chilling confrontation sets the stage for a gripping psychological battle where trust, guilt, and redemption are all at stake.
Ben Crystal delivers a deeply emotional performance as Eli, skillfully portraying a man on the edge of mental collapse. Jacob Jupe’s portrayal of Noah is equally haunting. He embodies a young boy struggling with inner demons while drawing eerie connections to Eli’s past. The supporting cast includes Rosie Perez, Maria Dizzia, and Ava Lalezarzadeh, all bringing depth to the narrative.
Sarah Thorp created the series, serving as showrunner and executive producer. With direction from Adam Bernstein for the pilot and Jet Wilkinson as the producing director, “Before” boasts a strong creative team. Academy Award-winner Eric Roth joins as an executive producer, lending prestige to the psychological thriller’s narrative complexity.
From its opening moments, the series sets a tense and foreboding atmosphere. The cinematography perfectly mirrors Eli’s mental disintegration, with shadowy, surreal sequences heightening the suspense.
The series artfully juxtaposes the calm of everyday life with the creeping terror of unresolved trauma. As Eli’s hallucinations of his dead wife become more intense, the line between reality and delusion blurs, making for a suspense-filled ride.
With strong performances, eerie visuals, and steadily escalating tension, this series will have audiences hooked until its climactic conclusion on December 20, 2024.
