This month the Bangkok authorities cracked down on street food and plan to remove it by the end of 2017. It sounds to me, rich big business types want to have influence that only serves their short term financial gain. Big business related corruption has been an ongoing challenge for the Thai economy for a very long time.
Bangkok is one of the great street food destinations in part because of its street food.
They’ll say it’s for health, but I bet a large part of the push is from protectionists. If McDonald’s is going to open in Bangkok, they don’t want anybody selling chicken wings on the street out front.
This is slowly happening in Mexico City, and also in China.
