Aurora Sky Castner, a teenager from Texas, has achieved remarkable success despite being born in jail. After graduating third in her class, she has gained admission to Harvard University. Castner’s mother was in prison when she gave birth, and her father took on the responsibility of raising her as a single parent. Castner’s application essay for Harvard began with the powerful statement, “I was born in prison.” Through early action, she was accepted into the prestigious Ivy League institution and intends to pursue a law degree.
During her upbringing, Castner frequently relocated with her father but remained within Montgomery County. Recognizing her potential, the staff at her elementary school recommended her for the CISD’s Project Mentor program, which pairs students with community volunteers. One of these mentors was Mona Hamby, who became deeply involved in Castner’s life. Hamby helped her not only with academic guidance but also with personal experiences, such as selecting eyeglasses and getting her first salon haircut. The community rallied around Castner, with dentists, orthodontists, and other leaders providing support for her dental health and enabling her to enjoy childhood activities like summer camp.

Castner expressed gratitude for Hamby’s influence, emphasizing the value of both her mentorship and the experiences she had before meeting Hamby. Mona and her husband, Randy Hamby, even accompanied Castner on a tour of the Harvard campus in March 2022, solidifying her commitment to attending the university.
