Audi, General Mills, Mondelez International, Pfizer, Volkswagen and others temporarily suspend ads on Twitter
Although General Motors was the first major American company to temporarily suspend paid advertising on Twitter, after Elon Musk bought the social media platform for $44 billion, many other national and global companies have followed suit. According to reports, food giants General Mills and Mondelez International and automotive giants Audi and Volkswagen have also temporarily suspended spending money for advertisements on Twitter.
Although General Motors was the first major American company to suspend its paid operations, people familiar with the matter told the Wall Street Journal that other giants including the Cheerios maker and the Oreos maker had also paused their operations.
The Journal also reported that Audi and General Mills’ representatives confirmed that their companies have temporarily suspended advertisements on Twitter. A spokeswoman for General Mills told the outlet, “As always, we will continue to monitor this new direction and evaluate our marketing spend.”
Different reasons have been mentioned for the pause. They include a concern that content moderation could be scaled back under the new management led by Elon Musk as it could result in an increase in content that would be considered objectionable; on the platform.
Another reason for the temporary suspension could be the uncertainty of the company’s operations. Many top executives have been fired or have left the company. There have been several reports that there would be a massive cutback of staff. The board has also been dissolved and Elon Musk is the only one who is currently leading the social media platform.
On Thursday, Audi of America said that they had paused advertising on the social media platform. The luxury car maker’s decision to temporarily suspend paid advertisements on Twitter comes shortly after Elon Musk took over the platform.
According to a report in Forbes, advertising company Interpublic Group, which has clients such as CVS and Nintendo, reportedly told its clients to stop buying advertisements on Twitter, temporarily. Havas Media has also reportedly recommended the same.
