On Friday (July 12), it was reported that an attacker gained unauthorized access to and made copies of AT&T (T) call logs, affecting almost all of AT&T’s wireless subscribers and clients of mobile virtual network operators who use AT&T’s wireless network.
The thieves acquired data that consisted of call and text records, which is thought to have originated from a previous data breach on Snowflake, a vendor specializing in cloud storage and data warehousing.
AT&T discovered in April that customer data had been illegally downloaded from our workspace on a third-party cloud platform. We immediately launched an investigation and engaged leading cybersecurity experts to understand the nature and scope of this criminal activity.
We have since taken measures to close the illegal access point and are actively cooperating with law enforcement, who have already apprehended at least one suspect involved in the incident.
AT&T’s investigation revealed that the compromised data includes AT&T records of calls and texts for nearly all AT&T cellular customers and customers of mobile virtual network operators (MVNOs) using AT&T’s wireless network.
Additionally, the data includes records for AT&T landline customers who interacted with these cellular numbers between May 1, 2022, and October 31, 2022.
A small subset of records from January 2, 2023, for a minimal number of customers, was also affected. These records detail the telephone numbers that AT&T or MVNO cellular numbers interacted with during these periods.
In some cases, the records also include one or more cell site identification numbers associated with these interactions.
U.S. securities rules mandate that companies notify consumers of security breaches 30 days after the incident is identified. However, the FBI approved a postponement due to security concerns when AT&T contacted them regarding the hack.
Following the data incident, consumers are recommended to change their account passwords and monitor their accounts for any odd activity.
Should consumers be worried about a possible personal information breach, they should closely check their bank accounts and immediately notify their credit card issuers if they find any unusual activity.
