No. 8 seed Stan Wawrinka of Switzerland needed less than 52 minutes to eliminate Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-0, 6-2 in the first round of the Moselle Open on Monday in Metz, France.

Wawrinka, the three-time Grand Slam winner and former world No. 3, won 80 percent of his points on both his first serve (16 of 20) and second serve (12 of 15). Zapata Miralles fought to a 2-2 tie to begin the second set before Wawrinka broke away in the final four games.

No. 6 seed Lorenzo Sonego had to rally to beat American Marcos Giron 2-6, 6-3, 7-6 (3). Sonego fired eight aces and saved three of five break points.

Another former world No. 3, Dominic Thiem of Austria, was in action Monday and beat French lucky loser Matteo Martineau 6-4, 6-2. Other winners included Russia’s Alexander Shevchenko and Frenchmen Luca Van Assche, Constant Lestienne and Harold Mayot.
