Tallon Griekspoor rallied to defeat defending champion Ugo Humbert of France 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 and reach the quarterfinals at the Dubai Tennis Championships on Wednesday.

The Dutchman hit 13 aces and saved six of seven break points against the No. 5 seed. He next will meet the No. 1 seed, Russia’s Daniil Medvedev, who topped France’s Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-4, 6-4. This is the third straight quarterfinal appearance for Medvedev in Dubai, where he won in 2023.

Also reaching the quarterfinals on Wednesday were Canada’s Felix-Auger-Aliassime, who defeated Nuno Borges of Portugal 4-6, 6-3, 7-5. Marin Cilic of Croatia, the former World No. 3, ousted Russia’s Alexei Popyrin 5-7, 6-3, 6-4 to set up a match with Auger-Aliassime.

Italians Luca Nardi and Matteo Berrettini also advanced, as did qualifier Quentin Halys of France. Nardi and Halys will face off in the quarterfinals. Berrettini will face No. 4 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece, who outlasted Russia’s Karen Khachanov 7-6 (4), 2-6, 6-4.

Abierto Mexicano Telcel

The top five seeds exited the event in Acapulco, Mexico, on Wednesday, but only two of them completed a second-round match.

The United States’ Learner Tien upset top-seeded Alexander Zverev of Germany 6-3, 6-4 in second-round action. Tien got the lone service break of the opening set in the penultimate game. In the second set, Zverev led 4-1 before Tien reeled off the final five games.

Meanwhile, second-seeded Casper Ruud of Norway and third-seeded Tommy Paul of the United States withdrew from the tournament due to stomach illnesses. Their scheduled opponents, Mexico’s Rodrigo Pacheco Mendez and the United States’ Marcos Giron, respectively, received walkovers into the quarterfinals.

Fourth-seeded Holger Rune of Denmark lost the first three games of his match against the United States’ Brandon Nakashima before retiring. Rune later wrote on social media that he was felled by food poisoning.

Belgium’s David Goffin defeated fifth-seeded Ben Shelton of the United State 7-6 (3), 6-3, and Spain’s Alejandro Davidovich Fokina knocked out seventh-seeded Frances Tiafoe of the United States 6-3, 6-7 (6), 6-3.

Eighth-seeded Tomas Machac of the Czech Republic and ninth-seeded Denis Shapovalov of Canada both registered straight-set wins.

Movistar Chile Open

Top-seeded Francisco Cerundolo of Argentina eked out a 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (5) win over Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann in the second round at Santiago, Chile.

Both players broke serve early in the third set, but neither had a break point the rest of the way. Cerundolo claimed the final three points of the tiebreaker.

Serbia’s Laslo Djere beat fourth-seeded Pedro Martinez of Spain 6-1, 6-4, and fifth-seeded Tomas Martin Etcheverry of Argentina downed Chile’s Cristian Garin 6-2, 6-4. Portugal’s Jaime Faria eliminated Brazilian qualifier Gustavo Heide 6-7 (2), 7-6 (5), 6-4.
