Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz slammed 17 aces en route to a three-set victory over Marcos Giron 6-4, 6-7 (5), 6-4 in the opening round of the Japan Open in Tokyo on Wednesday.

The No. 2 seed, Hurkacz won 82 percent of the points on first serve and converted three of his six break chances. The biggest one came in the first game of the third set. Tied at one set each, Giron lost serve and never could break back to even the match, which took just over two hours.

Also advancing Wednesday were Italy’s Matteo Berrettini and Ugo Humbert of France. Berrettini bested Botic Van De Zandschulp of the Netherlands 6-3, 6-4, and Humbert eliminated wild-card entrant Shintaro Mochizuki of Japan 6-1, 6-2.

China Open

The lone main-draw match on the day’s schedule in Beijing was canceled when Fabian Marozsan of Hungary withdrew due to illness. He was set to play Zhou Yi of China. Yi now will face Pavel Kotov of Russia in the opening round.
