Atlanta United FC will likely be without one of its top defenders when it travels to play CF Montreal on Saturday.
The club announced Tuesday that centerback George Campbell is “out week-to-week” after suffering an abductor injury during the club’s 2-1 loss to Inter Miami CF on Sunday.
Campbell, 20, is a homegrown player for the Five Stripes, having come up in their academy and playing for Atlanta United 2 before making his MLS debut in 2020.
He has featured in 24 MLS matches in his career, including eight this season, seven of which were starts. Campbell is second on the team in minutes played this season with 649, behind fellow defender Andrew Gutman (706).
“He’s a center back with enormous potential. We’re very high on George,” Atlanta coach Gonzalo Pineda said after the club’s loss to Miami. “He’s still a very young player, and at times, centerbacks just take a bit longer to find consistency. That’s all he’s missing and that will come in time, I would say. He has to believe in himself. I believe in him. The team believes in him, because he’s a hard worker.”
If Campbell can’t play on Saturday, Atlanta could turn to Argentine defender Alan Franco, or American Alex de John.
Atlanta (3-3-2, 11 points) is fourth in the Eastern Conference table this season.
