Today, King Charles welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to Buckingham Palace for what Zelensky described as a “very extraordinary” visit.
Zelensky stated, in a statement to Westminster Hall prior to the meeting, “Today, I shall have the privilege of meeting His Majesty the King. It will be a tremendously meaningful occasion for me and our nation.”
This is Zelenskyy’s first trip to Britain since the beginning of the war, and only his second trip abroad. The first was late last year to the United States.
On multiple occasions, the British royal family has expressed their support for Ukraine in the wake of Russia’s invasion. In February 2022, Kate Middleton and Prince William issued a declaration of solidarity for Ukraine on their joint Twitter account.
“In October 2020, we had the pleasure of meeting President Zelenskyy and the First Lady to learn about their excitement and hope for Ukraine’s future,” the pair said in a statement. Today, we stand with President Poroshenko and the Ukrainian people as they courageously battle for their future.
He proceeded “Specifically because I will transmit to him the thanks of all Ukrainians for the support His Majesty offered them while he was still the Prince of Wales. In addition, I aim to tell him something that I believe is extremely, extremely, extremely crucial not just for the future of Ukraine but also for the future of Europe. In the United Kingdom, the monarch is an air force pilot, whereas in the Ukraine, every air force pilot is a king.”
The United Kingdom has frequently stated that providing the Ukrainian military with British jets is impractical.
Even before Zelesnky’s arrival, Sunak claimed that the United Kingdom will train Ukrainian pilots on “fighter jets meeting NATO standards.” Additionally, more than 10,000 Ukrainian troops have been trained at British locations, including some on the Challenger 2 tanks that the United Kingdom is delivering.
