On Monday, May 3, 2021 an individual mounted an attack at the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) headquarters in Langley, Virginia. He was shot by a law enforcement official as he tried to breach the gate. He was wounded and taken to a hospital, nearby. He died in the hospital on Tuesday.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) said that the entire incident is being reviewed. The unauthorized person had tried to drive past the entrance gate. He was armed. The law enforcement armed guards at the gate tried to stop the armed suspect from entering the CIA facility without permission. In the skirmish, he was shot and wounded. He was transferred to a hospital.
The FBI said that the suspect had died of his injuries on Tuesday. The agency was examining the circumstances of the shooting. It also said that it was gathering evidence and additional details could not be provided as it was an ongoing incident.
Earlier in the day, the CIA also confirmed that there was an incident related to the security of its premises. According to WUSA9, the agency released a statement which said that they were addressing a security situation which took place just outside the secure perimeter of their headquarters, by their main gate. They said that they were coordinating with their local law enforcers partners.
The statement also added that their compound remained secured and that their Security Protective Officers who were working the incident were the only Agency personnel that were directly involved.
The CIA’s HQ is far away from the gate through which the suspect tried to enter. It is not known if any agent was harmed or injured in the incident. However, local media reported that there were road closures in the area. There was a huge police presence. Fairfax County Police were helping to guide traffic in and around the area.
