On Christmas day, a Georgia man’s attempt to rob a business on Christmas morning failed when he slipped on ice while attempting to flee. According to Gainesville police, it was “like a scene from Home Alone.” Luis Sajbocho-Ordonez, 30, allegedly hid behind a Gainesville business and pulled out a gun, demanding money from an employee who came out the back door early Sunday morning.
It happened around 1 a.m. Sunday behind the 415 Atlanta Highway business. The employee got into a fight with Sajbocho-Ordonez, who allegedly fired a shot after another worker exited the building and startled him. After that, Sajbocho-Ordonez allegedly attempted to flee the scene but slipped on a frozen patch and hit his head. Witnesses were able to take two guns from him until police arrived and arrested Sajbocho-Ordonez.
When Sajbocho-Ordonez attempted to flee the scene, he slipped on the ice, and his injuries have been compared to those of Marv, a character in the film Home Alone who slipped on the ice while attempting to enter the McCallister home in the Christmas classic from the 1990s.
More than 315,000 homes and businesses were without power on Christmas Eve due to an Arctic blast and winter storm that destroyed power lines with damaging winds and heavy snow and dropped temperatures dangerously low — conditions that killed at least 22 people. Snow flurries fell in parts of north Georgia Monday night as temperatures fell below freezing once more.
The snowfall had stopped by Tuesday morning, leaving only a few icy patches on the roads until temperatures began to rise throughout the day. Emergency medical services personnel treated Sajbochol-Ordonez at the scene. He was then taken to the Hall County Jail and was charged with aggravated assault and armed robbery. Additional charges, according to police, are possible.
