Joseph Pinion scored 22 points, Dyondre Dominguez added 19 and visiting Arkansas State upset No. 16 Memphis 85-72 on Sunday.
Taryn Todd scored 17 and Kobe Julien had 12 for the Red Wolves (7-3), who made 12-of-36 3-pointers compared to 7-of-22 for the Tigers (7-2).
PJ Haggerty scored 29 points, Dain Dainja added 16 points and 12 rebounds off the bench and Colby Rogers scored 11 to lead Memphis, which trailed for all but two minutes.
Haggerty made two free throws to start the second-half scoring and pull the Tigers within 42-31. But Pinion made a 3-pointer and added three free throws to expand the Red Wolves’ lead to 18.
Haggerty scored five points during a 10-0 run that got Memphis within eight. Todd made a layup to stop the run and Dominguez added a 3-pointer to push the visitors’ lead to 13.
Dainja made a dunk and added two free throws to help the Tigers creep within 60-53. But Todd answered with a 3-pointer and Julien added another basket from beyond the arc for a 70-58 advantage.
Haggerty sank two free throws before Pinion hit a 3-pointer and Cody Head added a field goal for a 15-point lead. Haggerty answered with a 3-pointer and Rogers added another to get the Tigers within 80-68.
But Arkansas State scored the next five points to take command.
Pinion’s 3-pointer gave the Red Wolves a 6-4 lead and they stayed on top the rest of the way.
Dainja scored three points to pull the Tigers within one before Pinion’s 3-pointer started an 11-0 run that gave Arkansas State a 19-7 lead.
Rogers hit a field goal to end a three-minute scoring drought for Memphis and the Tigers got within eight on a 3-pointer by Tyrese Hunter. Dominguez made two free throws to push the lead to 10.
The Red Wolves expanded the lead to 18 on three occasions before Dainya scored seven points to help Memphis get within 42-29 at halftime.
