Apple to stop working on electric car after ten years, team shifts to generative AI

Apple Inc. has been working on Project Titan for about a decade. This secret project, whose progress or lack of progress has been leaked through the years, was the tech giant’s ambitious plan to build an electric car. The decade-old project mired in secrecy at Apple is winding down, and some team members from the car project will be moved to the company’s AI division. Project Titan was beset with problems through the years, per sources who wished to remain anonymous.

People who did not want to be identified told Bloomberg that an internal disclosure was sent to almost 2,000 employees. The announcement was not made public, so sources wish to remain anonymous as they share the news.

Two executives, Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams and Vice President of the project Kevin Lynch, reportedly told the staff about the winding down of the project. Some of the nearly 2,000 staff are expected to be absorbed into the AI division of the tech giant. There will also be layoffs, but the number of workers who will lose their jobs has not yet been ascertained.

Apple began working on the launch of an electric car in 2014. It hired veterans from Tesla and EV startup Canoo, and the project was named Project Titian. As per our earlier reports, the project has faced setbacks over the years. The company had considered a 2028 car launch.

Some factors for the delay in progress included high turnover among staff, including the exit of car chief Doug Field. The project was also scaled down in 2021, according to reports. Plans were also in flux, and there was reportedly internal skepticism among the core team.

Apple has recently been focusing on its AI model, reportedly called Ajax. Apple had announced that its AI model would be launched later this year.
