Apple announced on Wednesday that it would remove the blood oxygen feature from its latest Apple Watches. This will allow the company to import and sell these watches in the U.S. The Cupertino giant said modified versions of Apple Watch Series 9 and Ultra 2 will be sold starting Thursday. These watches were introduced in September.
The company said that users will be directed to the Apple website when they tap on the blood oxygen feature on the modified watches. The icon will be on the clock, but tapping on it will direct users to an explanation for the absence of the part. Apple reportedly developed a software workaround for this feature.
Masimo, a medical device company based in the U.S., had claimed that Apple had infringed on its patents for a blood oxygen feature. The case has been on for months. In October, the International Trade Commission ruled that Apple had infringed on Masimo’s patents.
Apple received a brief ban in December, followed by a reprieve. However, on Wednesday, an appeals court lifted an injunction that blocked the ban from going into effect. The court has not overturned the decision of the ITC, and it remains under appeal.
Apple released a statement that said that its “appeal is ongoing” and that the tech giant disagreed with the decision taken by the USITC and the resulting orders.
Apple also said it complied with the rules by introducing a new version of the Apple Watch Series 9 and Apple Ultra 2 “without the Blood Oxygen Feature” and more.
Apple could also face an antitrust lawsuit in March from the Justice Department. Its shares were recently downgraded to neutral by some analysts after the Supreme Court declined to hear its petition against Epic. Although Apple won a significant victory in the Epic case, it has to allow developers to add buttons or links to steer users to cheaper paying options than Apple’s App Store.
Apple has seen a few setbacks these past few months that are not only legal but also financial. Microsoft has recently overtaken it and is now the world’s most valuable company.
