Officials announced Friday that Apple (AAPL) will produce iPhones at a new plant in India as the US tech giant looks to increase output there and diversify away from China.
The main hub of the flagship mobile’s global supply chain is China, where production has been hampered by last year’s stringent Covid regulations and ongoing diplomatic tensions with the United States.
Basavaraj S. Bommai, the chief minister of Karnataka state, tweeted on Friday that Apple phones would shortly be produced in the region.
The planned factory, according to Rajeev Chandrasekhar, India’s state minister for information technology, will span 300 acres in the state that is home to Bengaluru, the country’s tech hub.
Following a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi earlier this week, Foxconn Chairman Young Liu, according to local media, visited that city on Friday and made the statement.
Modi tweeted on Wednesday, “Our discussions covered numerous topics targeted at enhancing India’s tech and innovation eco-system.
Liu committed on Thursday to establishing 100 000 jobs worth of electronics production in the neighboring southern state of Telangana.
Requests for feedback from AFP went unanswered from Apple and Foxconn.
Modi’s “Make in India” plan, under which he has urged foreign companies to manufacture goods in the South Asian nation, is strengthened by Apple’s decision to increase manufacturing there.
