According to a popular outlet, Apple (AAPL) has recently filed important patents for making a flip device. This has ignited rumors among Apple analysts and web fans about whether the Cupertino giant will finally make a flip iPhone. However, many Apple analysts believe that the tech giant would most probably initially release a foldable iPad or a device that is a cross between an iPad and a Macbook before an iPhone.
Apple reported that it has patented the hinge, a key part of an iPhone or other foldable device. It is called “hinges for folding devices.” The filing was made at the USPTO in October 2023 and was published in May 2024.
The patent has demonstrations that show how a device can fold vertically. It has a hinge mechanism as well as a flexible screen. It notes that the hinge can bend both inwards as well as outwards.
Patently Apple also reported that Apple has a continuation patent for a “folded display device with curved side walls that could contain touch surfaces.” The earlier patent was filed in 2016, and the pre-existing application has been updated.
In 1996, Motorola introduced the first flip phone, StarTAC. However, these phones went out of style as Apple and Samsung introduced smartphones with touch screens and innumerable apps. In 2020, Motorola and Samsung launched smart flip phones, which have been popular since then.
Apple has a vast web fan base worldwide that embraces its products. Whether it launches a flip iPhone, a flip iPad, or a new device between an iPad and a Mac does not matter to these loyal fans.
