American Express credit cards suffered a data breach after a merchant processor, in which American Express Card member data was processed, was hacked. According to a popular outlet, hackers accessed American Express Card account numbers, names, and expiration dates.
BleepingComputer reported that American Express warned customers that their credit card might have been stolen. The data breach notification was filed with the state of Massachusetts under “American Express Travel Related Services Company.”
According to the outlet, the data breach notification stated, “We became aware that a third-party service provider engaged by numerous merchants experienced unauthorized access to its system.”
It also stated, “Account information of some of our Card members, including some of your account information, may have been involved. It is important to note that this incident did not compromise American Express owned or controlled systems, and we are providing this notice to you as a precautionary measure.”
BleepingComputer reported that American Express had outlined the card company’s measures to deal with data breaches.
American Express said they begin an investigation and notify the required regulatory authorities when they learn about a data security incident. The card company also said they then work to identify the customers impacted by the breach and notify them as per the required laws and regulations.
The company also asked its customers to review their account statements every 12 to 24 months and report any discrepancies.
American Express suggests that customers enable instant notifications to receive them using the company’s mobile app. This is a general suggestion for customers of other financial institutions and banks.
American Express advises customers to request a new card if their card information is stolen, as hackers tend to sell customers’ information on cybercrime marketplaces. All financial institutions and card companies worldwide give this advice to all cardholders and wallets.
