The defamation trial of celebrities Johnny Depp and Amber Heard concluded Thursday, with both sides resting their cases. Judge Penney Azcarate discharged the jury at midday, saying that deliberations would resume following closing arguments on Friday morning.
On Thursday, Heard took the stand again to defend her counterclaim against her ex-husband. She is suing for $100 million in retaliation for allegations made by Depp’s former attorney Adam Waldman accusing Heard of arranging a “hoax.”
Camille Vasquez, Depp’s lawyer, aggressively cross-examined Amber Heard, questioning whether Heard or her legal team informed TMZ about her court appearance in May 2016 to obtain a restraining order against Depp. Heard denied the allegation asking, ‘What domestic abuse survivor wants that?’
Vasquez shifted attention to the events at the trailer park in Hicksville, California, where Heard said Depp performed a “cavity search” on her after a furious outbreak that had wrecked their trailer, but the site’s manager disagreed and found only $62 in damage to a light fixture.
Vasquez also questioned if Heard was jealous of Depp because of his lack of attention, and on her comments that Depp should go to the ‘judge and jury’ and declare himself as a victim of domestic abuse.
The actress said that Depp had pledged to ruin her career, take her life, and humiliate her globally. Amber sobbed in court as she described how Depp’s ‘smear campaign’ against her has upended her life.
She said she suffered as a result of Depp’s statement and is “harassed, humiliated, and threatened every single day.’ She stated that people want to murder her, and they tell her that every day. They have also expressed their wish to kill her and “microwave” her one-year-old daughter, Oonagh Paige Heard.
Heard also claimed that since the allegations of her fabricating her abuse, she has been unable to find work and that people are afraid to associate with her due to threats and other abuses.
On the stand as a rebuttal witness on Wednesday, Depp categorically denied Heard’s charges of abuse. He stated that he never pushed Kate Moss down any stairs, yet Heard had spewed it three times. Recalling the incident, he said that Kate walked out the door and slipped and fell on the three small wooden stairs. She was in pain and Depp claimed he helped her and made sure she was okay.
Depp revealed that he had assisted Heard in landing the role of Mera in Aquaman. She requested him to pull a few strings, which he said he did, stating the names of the people from Warner Bros. he spoke to. The actor tried to convince the jury of Heard’s abuse by showing photos where he has a black eye and a swollen one.
