Amazon joins nuclear club following Microsoft, Google, CWEB reports on $500 million reactor investment

Amazon (AMZN) has become the latest American giant to invest in nuclear power, following other American titans such as Microsoft and Google. Its subsidiary Amazon Web Services announced signing an agreement with Dominion Energy to develop a small modular nuclear reactor. This is one of the paths that Amazon is taking to reach net zero carbon emissions. Nuclear energy will also be used for its generative AI applications.

Amazon is investing more than $500 million in three projects as its data centers and other operations are growing in demand for power. This investment is in nuclear power, which emits zero carbon into the atmosphere.

AWS has agreed with Dominion in Virginia and intends to expand operations in the state. In 2023, Governor Glenn Youngkin of Virginia said that AWS would invest $35 billion in multiple data centers nationwide by 2040.

Matt Garman, CEO of AWS, said the company would progress towards its “Climate Pledge” of “net-zero carbon” in all operations by 2040.

According to the press release, Robert M. Blue, Chair, President, and CEO of Dominion Energy, said that the agreement with Amazon and other tech companies will “accelerate the development of carbon-free power generation in Virginia” and more.

Amazon also announced that it has reached an energy partnership with Energy Northwest in Washington State. Energy Northwest will construct, own, and operate four advanced SMRs with approximately 320 megawatts (MW) in the first phase, and an expected option is to increase nuclear power generation to 960 MW.

Earlier, Google announced an agreement with small, medium reactor (SMR) developer Kairos Power to purchase nuclear energy. Microsoft said it will purchase power from Constellation Energy as it restarts the Three Mile Island nuclear plant for the tech giant’s data centers. Now, Amazon has become the latest tech company to buy nuclear power from Dominion Energy and Energy Northwest.
