When Hulu announced that it would be adapting the podcast The Dropout as a television series, there was not much enthusiasm. However, in Amanda Seyfried, who channels Elizabeth Holmes to a formidable extent in the televised version, viewers see depth and nuances that could not be explained through a podcast.
The series, written by show writer Liz Meriwether, brings in a higher level of understanding of the emotions of all those who were involved in this true story of the rise and fall of young entrepreneur Elizabeth Holmes whose idea for the Theranos startup was good but was one that could not be implemented technologically, at least as of now, or in the near future.
The TV series also offers a deeper look into Elizabeth Holmes’ relationship with Sunny Balwani. Many people had questioned the relationship negatively. Amanda Seyfried said that she also was unable to understand the deep connection until she enacted the role of Holmes in The Dropout.
In an interview with E! News Seyfried said that many people had questioned why Homes had to be with Sunny, what did he have and also what business he had with Holmes.
Amanda replied saying that the answer was simple. Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani “felt very safe with each other.”
Amanda added that it didn’t make sense from a distance through the audience’s eyes but seeing it from the perspective of The Dropout made so much more sense.
Seyfried also said that there had been judgements made about Holmes by podcast listeners as well as journalists. They didn’t know anything about Elizabeth Holmes as a person and hence they judged her. This was the reason she said that the portrayal was so important.
Naveen Andrews, the actor who portrays Sunny, said that Elizabeth and Sunny “were bound together” in both their ideas and their actions. The series showcases them speaking Mandarin, exploring Tokyo and more, while being unaware of how their story would unfold in the future.
The series The Dropout featuring the story of Elizabeth Holmes, the founder of Theranos and her partner Sunny Balwani will debut on Thursday March 3, on Hulu.
