Alphabet’s Google (GOOGL) has many successful teams dealing separately with hardware and Android. Still, the fast emergence of AI has made Google take a different step forward, one that had been internally considered for years, according to high-level team leads. Google has decided to integrate the Android and hardware devices teams under one umbrella called Platforms and Devices to oversee all its products.
Rick Osterloh, the former SVP of devices and services, will head the newly created team of Platforms and Devices. He oversaw all hardware efforts undertaken by the tech giant. He will now oversee the following products:
Pixel
Android
Chrome
ChromeOS
Photos and others.
Hiroshi Lockheimer has been the head of Android, Chrome, and ChromeOS for several years. He will now oversee other projects in Google and Android.
Osterloh spoke to The Verge and said, “… I think that hardware/software/AI integration showed how AI could transform a user experience,” further confirming that AI was at the heart of integrating the teams.
He also mentioned GPU, as in Tensor products, would be faster to improve when both the teams work as a single or more.
The Verge editor David Pierce spoke to Osterloh and Lockheimer, who were seated in the latter’s office on Google Meet. The editor said they have been friends and colleagues, and they laughed loudly when he jokingly suggested that the new team change resulted from “some internal power struggle.” Lockheimer said that now was the right time for something that had been under discussion for more than two years
