U.S. billionaire financier George Soros has handed over the reins of his massive empire that includes Open Society Foundations (OSF) to his son Alex. The news was first reported in an interview published in the Wall Street Journal and was later confirmed by a spokesperson for Soros to other outlets.
Earlier the 92-year former hedge founder George Soros, who became a well-known philanthropist later in his life, had said that he did not want any of his children to take over OSF. However, on Sunday he said that he was handing over the foundation as well as the rest of his empire worth about 25 billion to his 37-year-old son Alex Soros.
In the Wall Street Journal interview George Soros says, “He’s earned it.”
The OSF helps groups who back human rights all over the world. It has reportedly given such groups around the world about $1.5 billion in 2021.
Alex Soros was also interviewed by the Journal. He mentioned being “more political” than his father has been, and said that he would expand OSF’s priorities which would also include voting rights, abortion rights, and gender equity.
Alex Soros is actively involved with leading figures who espouse the cause of democracy. Some of them include
President Joe Biden of the U.S.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silvia of Brazil and
Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.
Alex Soros is expected to use the foundation’s clout to try to continue to bring change to right-wing governments all over the world.
Alex Soros is the son of George Soros and his second wife Susan Weber. He studied history at New York University. He completed a PhD from the University of California, Berkeley.
