During his ongoing murder trial for the 2021 deaths of his wife and son, South Carolina attorney Alex Murdaugh took the witness stand in his own defense. On Thursday, the 54-year-old who is accused of killing them at their remote hunting cabin was questioned regarding discrepancies in his account of the evening that his wife Maggie and their son Paul were shot to death. Murdaugh, in his testimony, acknowledged lying to law enforcement about his whereabouts on the day they were murdered.
On Friday, the second day of a cross-examination that was growing more heated, prosecutor Creighton Waters questioned Murdaugh about his “new narrative” regarding what took place on the evening of June 7, 2021. According to the prosecution, Murdaugh murdered his wife and son to gain sympathy for his loss and avoid being held accountable for a multi-million-dollar financial fraud.

Despite the defendant’s claims to the contrary, his voice could be heard on a cellphone video recorded at the kennels by his son about five minutes before the killings were alleged to have occurred.
Murdaugh also expressed his regret for lying about the last time he saw Maggie and Paul to his living son Buster and other family members. He disputed killing Maggie and Paul despite acknowledging that he had lied. Though Murdaugh has refuted the accusations of murder, he has acknowledged taking large amounts of money from clients and business associates to support an opioid addiction.
The former lawyer is accused of more than one hundred crimes, including alleged money schemes like tax evasion, in addition to the alleged murders. He was detained in October 2021 after fleeing a Florida drug rehab center on charges that included obtaining property through false pretenses.
On the evening of June 7, 2021, Murdaugh dialed 911 and informed the operators that he had discovered his wife and child’s corpses outside their hunting lodge in Colleton County, a rural area of South Carolina.

In testimony this week, Murdaugh conjectured that his son Paul, who had been operating a boat while intoxicated and killed a passenger, was the target of the shootings. Murdaugh also maintained that he had made an effort to assist police in solving the killings of his wife and child. He also claimed that on some of the days preceding the fatalities, he had been taking more than 2,000 milligrams of oxycodone. Buster Murdaugh, the living son of Murdaugh, also gave testimony this week in support of his father. He characterized that his father had been emotionally distressed in the days after the murders.
