Actor Alec Baldwin and armorer Hannah Gutierrez Reed will face involuntary manslaughter charges for the deadly shooting of a colleague, Helena Hutchinson on the set of Rust–a startling declaration after Baldwin constantly maintained the incident was a tragic accident.
Carmack-Altwies said that David Halls, the film’s assistant director, signed a plea agreement for the allegation of negligent use of a lethal weapon and will face a suspended sentence plus six months of probation.
On October 21, 2021, Baldwin fatally shot cinematographer Halyna Hutchins while setting up for a scene at a ranch near Santa Fe. Baldwin maintains he was pointing a gun at Hutchins when it accidently discharged, killing her, and injuring the film’s director, Joel Souza.
Investigators subsequently discovered that Gutierrez Reed, the film’s 24-year-old armorer, was the one who loaded Baldwin’s gun with a live round instead of blanks using crime scene images and phone records from Baldwin. According to investigators, the rounds had similar markings but were assorted colors.
Alec Baldwin did place his trust in the armor and the AD the question will be is he guilty of two counts of involuntary manslaughter. It is still in question of how a live gun got on the set.

Baldwin defense team will have a tough time in getting these charges dismissed. This is one of the toughest charges to defend here’s why it’s simply not a mistake if he shot and missed the person if he shot and it just harmed the person there would be no charges. However, if a death occurs and that mistake results in death from your mistake it becomes involuntary manslaughter. The defense attorneys will have to have to produce some positive information that caused him to act which makes it not a mistake specifically that somehow someone had given Mr. Baldwin the extraordinarily strong opinion that was not a live round in there he must have gotten some misinformation. It will be a difficult case on the defense. Sleuths and criminology fans are paying close attention to the case.
Santa Fe New Mexico District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies District said live rounds on set were a part of the totality on set. “On my watch, no one is above the law, and everyone deserves justice. ” Three people on set she said did not do their job for gun safety. Unintentional killings are charged as manslaughter. The killing happened due to negligence and did not prepare safety procedures and failed to carry out their basic duties. She said,” They acted with negligence and should have been using a plastic gun not a live gun which resulted in negligent behavior. Altwies is confident that Baldwin “absolutely” did pull the trigger and he claims he did not pull the trigger. She is not aware of how the live rounds got on the set. Those projectiles should have been checked and she claims they were not. Altwies says she is looking for justice for Helena Hutchinson.
A preliminary hearing will take place for the prosecution to present evidence.
