Two supermarket chains, Aldi Inc. and Hy-Vee Inc., have initiated a widespread recall of certain cream cheese products due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall, announced following a voluntary action by cream cheese manufacturer Schreiber Foods, underscores the importance of stringent quality control measures in the food industry.
In a press release, Aldi announced that it has recalled its “Happy Farms Whipped Cream Cheese Spread, Chive & Onion Cream Cheese Spread, Cream Cheese Spread, and Strawberry Cream Cheese Spread products. The affected products are recalled due to potential salmonella.”
The other supermarket giant, Hy-Vee, Inc., released an announcement that it is “…voluntarily recalling two varieties of its Hy-Vee Cream Cheese Spread out of an abundance of caution due to the potential for contamination with Salmonella. Additionally, Hy-Vee is voluntarily recalling its bulk-packaged Cookies & Cream Mix out of an abundance of caution due to the potential for contamination with Salmonella.” The impacted items were supplied to various outlets within Hy-Vee’s network, encompassing Hy-Vee supermarkets, Hy-Vee Drugstore branches, Dollar Fresh Market stores, and Hy-Vee Fast and Fresh convenience outlets.
Customers who discover they have bought any of the recalled items are advised to dispose of them or return them to their nearby Hy-Vee store for a complete reimbursement.
The affected products were distributed to multiple stores across 30 states and Washington, D.C. While no confirmed cases of illness have been reported, the recall aims to prevent any potential health risks associated with salmonella exposure.
According to the FDA, “Salmonella bacteria cause the foodborne illness salmonellosis.” It can cause a range of symptoms, including diarrhea, fever, and stomach cramps. Given its prevalence, salmonella poses a significant public health concern, prompting swift action from both manufacturers and retailers.
According to reports, Schnucks has initiated a recall of its regular, whipped, and strawberry spreads, while Hornbacher’s is recalling its Essential Everyday garden vegetable cream cheese. These products were also manufactured by Schreiber Foods.
Cream cheese, celebrated for its versatility and creamy texture, has long been a staple in American households. However, it is also susceptible to bacterial contamination, owing to its low acidity and high moisture content.
