A’ja Wilson-led Aces look to remain hot vs. Mystics

The Las Vegas Aces go for a season sweep of the Mystics when they travel to Washington for a Sunday afternoon showdown.

Las Vegas (15-7) has won nine of its last 10 games and is in fourth place. Washington (6-17) has dropped four of its last six and sits in 10th.

Aces star A’ja Wilson has been on a tear, averaging 30 points and 15 rebounds in her last four games. Wilson leads the WNBA in points (27.1) and ranks second in rebounds (11.6). This week it was also revealed that she would be on the cover of the NBA 2K25 video game, along with Jayson Tatum of the Boston Celtics and retired NBA star Vince Carter.

Wilson was named an All-Star for the sixth time and was also the Western Conference Player of the Month for May and June.

“I feel like the most motivation for me – and everyone probably knows the story – is the fourth-place vote,” said Wilson on ESPN’s First Take Friday discussing the WNBA MVP balloting last season.

“That was something that was all the motivation I needed, in my eyes, maybe top two, I get it, but to see a fourth place vote, I was like, ‘OK, maybe I have more work to be done.’ That was my motivation to put my imprint on this league and take no prisoners.”

Wilson recorded 33 points and 18 rebounds in Friday’s 84-70 road win over the Atlanta Dream.

The Mystics’ record may look shaky, but Washington started the season 0-12 and is still climbing out of that hole. Coach Eric Thibault’s squad is coming off Wednesday’s 89-84 road victory over the Indiana Fever.

“I thought we did a lot of things well,” Thibault said. “I thought we played with good force, and we made them feel us. We were disciplined in our coverages, which is what we wanted to do better than last time.”

Las Vegas cruised to a 98-77 home win over the Mystics on July 4 after winning 88-77 in Washington on June 29. Wilson was held to a season-low 11 points in the win on June 29.

Eight of the Aces’ last nine wins have been by 10 points or more.
