AJ Dybantsa scored 33 points, collected 10 rebounds, and dished out 10 assists to lead No. 10 BYU to a 109-81 victory over Eastern Washington in Provo, Utah, on Monday night.
Dybantsa was the first BYU player to record a triple-double since Kyle Collinsworth posted one against UAB on March 16, 2016. He secured the triple-double after assisting on a 3-pointer from Mihailo Boskovic with 2:00 left.
Richie Saunders had 22 points and Kennard Davis Jr. added 17 to help the Cougars (12-1) go undefeated through a four-game homestand. Rob Wright III chipped in 17 points and seven assists. Saunders, Davis, Wright and Dybantsa combined to make 14 3-pointers.
Kiree Huie led Eastern Washington with 17 points. Jojo Anderson and Alton Hamilton IV added 13 apiece for the Eagles (2-11) who lost to a Big 12 opponent for the third time this season.
BYU shot 60.5% from the field in the second half to break open a close game. The Cougars scored 26 points off 14 turnovers.
Eastern Washington made seven straight baskets to scratch out an 18-14 lead. Seven different players made a basket for the Eagles, culminating in Emmett Marquardt’s 3-pointer that capped a 12-5 run.
BYU countered with a 15-4 go-ahead run. Saunders capped the run with a 3-point play that extended the Cougars’ lead to 29-22.
The Eagles heated up from the perimeter to make it a one-possession game again. Marquardt and Hamilton buried back-to-back 3-pointers to cut the deficit to 47-46 in the final minute before halftime.
Saunders countered with back-to-back 3-pointers to put BYU up 53-48 at the half. That set the stage for hot shooting from the Cougars coming out of the locker room.
Saunders and Dybantsa each scored a pair of 3-pointers in four minutes to extend BYU’s lead to 72-56. The Cougars made 10-of-12 shots over a five-minute stretch spanning both halves.
