AI Boom Fuels Power Stocks, But Barclays Warns of Risks

The AI boom has been a major catalyst for power stocks, as the rapid growth of data centers fuels expectations for surging energy demand. However, Barclays is cautioning investors that these stocks remain vulnerable to further shocks, particularly in light of the recent developments in AI efficiency.
Why Power Stocks Rallied

The U.S. Department of Energy projects that data center electricity demand could rise 14%-21% annually through 2030, potentially tripling to 560 TWh (13% of total U.S. electricity demand).
Power providers such as Vistra, Constellation Energy (NASDAQ:CEG), and Talen Energy have benefited from this bullish outlook.
The AI-driven demand surge was compared to past industrial revolutions, where infrastructure investments played a critical role.

DeepSeek’s AI Model Sparks Volatility

Chinese AI start-up DeepSeek introduced its R1 Large Language Model (LLM), which reportedly operates on fewer resources than traditional models from OpenAI, Google (NASDAQ:GOOGL), and Meta (NASDAQ:META).
This triggered a sharp sell-off in power stocks on January 27, outpacing even Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA), as investors questioned whether power-hungry AI models would continue dominating the industry.

Barclays’ Warning: Prepare for More Volatility
Barclays noted:

“With their volatilities screening fairly rich, bearish risk reversals look attractive.”
This suggests investors may hedge against further AI-related shocks in power stocks.
Despite a partial rebound, the recovery of power stocks lags behind other AI-driven sectors.

Tracking Power Market Trends
For investors assessing the AI-energy nexus, relevant market insights can be gathered from:

Commodities API – Monitor electricity and energy prices in real time.
Sector P/E Ratio API – Compare valuation shifts in energy vs. tech sectors post-sell-off.

Conclusion
While the AI boom has boosted power stocks, Barclays warns of potential downside risks amid evolving AI efficiency trends. Investors should closely monitor energy demand forecasts and consider hedging strategies as the AI landscape rapidly evolves.
