Following numerous humiliating setbacks, the House finally passed legislation vital to the United States national security infrastructure on Friday.
An earlier vote, however, was perhaps more significant; the House voted 213-208 to begin debate on the measure to renew Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, a procedural hurdle that Mike Johnson had failed to surmount because of party extremists who refused even to consider it.
This is a significant change from Wednesday when the vote failed 228-192 due to 19 GOP defectors; five Republicans did not vote, but no one voted against it.
As Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene prepares to bring an ouster motion, Johnson could use a successful vote and party unity to give him the leverage he needs to defend himself. The Republican from Georgia has previously stated that she is keeping an eye on the FISA vote as she considers how to move forward with a measure to depose Johnson as speaker.
